Yoso ni dani mi ni shimu kure no shika no ne ni ikanaru tsuma ka tsurenakaruran

English Translation
Even to a stranger
it pierces to the bone at dusk,
the crying of the deer,
what sort of mate could she be
to stay so cold to it?
Meaning
The deer's cry at dusk pierces even a stranger to the bone. What sort of mate can remain so cold to it?
Commentary
Book Five Autumn Poems II 320

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed as a poem on the deer"
Composed as a poem on the deer. The deer's voice at dusk pierces even the poet, who has nothing to do with it, so how, he wonders, can the very mate being called remain unmoved? Questioning the doe that does not answer, he stresses how poignant the deer's voice is.
The author, "Shun'e Hōshi," was the son of Minamoto no Toshiyori. A monk of Tōdaiji, he named his quarters at Shirakawa in the capital the Karin'en, the Poetry Grove, and made it a gathering place for many poets. A poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
This is the fourth of a run of nine poems, 317 through 325, composed as "poems on the deer."
The third line of the text reads "shika no ne ni," which does not match "shika no ne o" in the reading line. Here the text is followed.

First line, "yoso ni dani": "yoso" is a matter that does not concern one, and "dani" means "even," naming the lighter case, "even to one who hears it as another's affair."
Second line, "mi ni shimu kure no": "mi ni shimu" is to be felt to the bone, and "kure" is dusk, binding the deer's voice to evening as in 317 of this book.
Third line, "shika no ne ni": "ni" marks the object, "toward this deer's voice."
Fourth line, "ikanaru tsuma ka": the interrogative "ka" closes with the attributive "ran" in the last line, asking "what kind of mate is she?"
Fifth line, "tsurenakaruran": "tsurenashi" means cold or unmoved, and "ran" is the present conjecture "ramu," "how can she stay unmoved?"
