Shiragiku no ha ni oku tsuyu ni yadorazu wa hana to zo mimashi terasu tsukikage

English Translation
On white chrysanthemums,
had it not lodged in the dew
lying on the leaves,
I would have thought it the flowers,
the moonlight shining there
Meaning
Had the moonlight not lodged in the dew on the leaves of the white chrysanthemums, I would have taken that shining light for the flowers themselves.
Commentary
Book Five Autumn Poems II 347

Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Moonlight on Chrysanthemum Blossoms'"
Composed on the topic "Moonlight on Chrysanthemum Blossoms." The moonlight on the white chrysanthemums is as white as the blossoms, the poet says, so had it not lodged and gleamed in the dew on the leaves, he would have mistaken the moonlight for the flowers themselves. He conveys how the whiteness of flower and moonlight melt together through the conceit of barely telling them apart by the light lodging in the dew on the leaves.
The author, "Uchi no Ōimauchigimi," is Fujiwara no Yoshimichi, eldest son of Regent Kujō Kanezane, who rose to Palace Minister but died young.
The five poems from 346 through 350 of this book are poems on chrysanthemums, and 346, 348 and 350 all end with "shiragiku no hana," the white chrysanthemum.

First line, "shiragiku no": the white chrysanthemum, as in the last line "shiragiku no hana" of 346, 348 and 350 of this book.
Second line, "ha ni oku tsuyu ni": pointing not to the flowers but to the dew on the leaves, where the moonlight lingers.
Third line, "yadorazu wa": "yadoru" is for light to lodge and be reflected, and "zu wa" sets a supposition, "had it not."
Fourth line, "hana to zo mimashi": "mashi" is counterfactual, answering "zu wa" in the third line, "I would have seen it as the flowers." "Zo" closes with "mashi" in the attributive, and the poem pauses here.
Fifth line, "terasu tsukikage": the poem ends on a noun, naming at last what might have been mistaken for the flowers and giving the topic's "moonlight shining."
