Book Thirteen Love Poems III 825
Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Love told as another's'"
Composed on the topic "love told as another's," confessing one's love while claiming it is someone else's. Unable to hide it any longer, he says, shall I now say that it is I? For she does not seem likely to cast the thought aside. He has told her, as though of someone else, that a certain person loves her, but since she seems not unwilling, he wavers over whether to come forward and say it is really he.
The author, "the Palace Minister," is Fujiwara no Yoshimichi, eldest son of Regent Kujō Kanezane, who rose to Palace Minister but died young.
The next poem, 826, is by his younger brother Fujiwara no Yoshitsune on the same topic, "love told as another's." Where this poem wavers over whether to give his name, the next declares there is no need to hide even one's name, so that two poems treat the same topic from the sides of hesitation and resolve.
First line, "shinobikane": "kanu" means unable to, "unable to hide my love any longer."
Second line, "ima wa ware to ya": "ya" is an interrogative particle that binds with "mashi" in the third line, "now, that it is I," taking up the "as another's" of the topic.
Third line, "nanoramashi": "mashi" is an auxiliary of hesitant will in the attributive form, concluding "ya," "shall I give my name?" The poem pauses here and stands in inverted order with the lower half.
Fourth line, "omoisutsubeki": "beki" is the attributive of the conjectural "beshi," "likely to cast aside."
Fifth line, "keshiki naraneba": "keshiki" is her manner, "ne" the realized form of the negative "zu," and "ba" a fixed condition, "since she does not seem so."
