Commentary
Book Six Winter Poems 395

Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Early Winter at a Mountain Dwelling'"
Composed on the topic of early winter at a mountain dwelling. When did the water in the bamboo pipe freeze, the poet asks, since that would explain why the storm sounds different? At his mountain home he notices that the trickle of water in the pipe has fallen silent so that only the storm stands out, and from this he realizes the water has frozen. It is a poem that catches winter through the ear.
The author, "Fujiwara no Takayoshi," was an official and poet of the mid to late Heian period, but little is known of his life.
The opening poem of this book, 387, also uses "itsu no ma ni" to express surprise at water unexpectedly frozen. The opening poem takes up a stream among rocks and this poem a mountain dwelling's pipe, singing of the same surprise in different places.

First line, "itsu no ma ni": the same words as the third line of the book's opening poem, 387, showing surprise at an unexpected change.
Second line, "kakehi no mizu no": a "kakehi" is a channel of joined bamboo or wood that brings mountain water to a house.
Third line, "kōru ramu": "ramu" conjectures a cause, asking when it froze. The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "sa koso arashi no": "sa," "so," points to the frozen water of the upper verse, and the emphatic "koso" closes with "me" in the perfective form in the last line.
Fifth line, "oto no kawarame": "me," the perfective form of the conjectural "mu," accepts the reason, "that is why the storm sounds different." 393, two poems earlier, also hears winter in a change in the sound of the wind.
