Book Six Winter Poems 406
Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Winter Showers in the Late Hours Before Dawn'"
Composed on the topic of winter showers in the late hours before dawn. Have the tears shed sleeping alone reached up into the sky, the poet asks, as the dawn moon is clouded by showers? Taking the showers that cloud the sky before daybreak for tears of lonely sorrow that have risen to the heavens, he lays the heart of a person over the look of the sky.
The author, "Sesshō Saki no Udaijin," Regent and former Minister of the Right, is Kujō Kanezane, son of Regent Fujiwara no Tadamichi. He rose from Minister of the Right to Regent, and later to Chancellor and Grand Minister. He left the diary Gyokuyō.
This poem and the next, 407, are on the same topic of showers before dawn. Both have "kayou ramu" as their third line, this one singing of passage between tears and sky and the next of passage between dream and waking, and the two form a pair.
First line, "hitorine no": sleeping alone, suggesting a lonely night apart from a lover. 444 of this book also hears hail while sleeping alone.
Second line, "namida ya sora ni": the interrogative "ya" closes with the attributive "ramu" in the third line.
Third line, "kayou ramu": "kayou" is to pass back and forth, to reach. "Have my tears reached the sky?" The poem pauses here. The next poem, 407, has the same third line.
Fourth line, "shigure ni kumoru": "clouded by the showers," overlaying the showers of the sky with the tears of earth.
Fifth line, "ariake no tsuki": the poem ends on a noun. The "ariake no tsuki" is the moon still in the sky at daybreak, marking the hour before dawn.
