Utatane wa yume ya utsutsu ni kayou ramu samete mo onaji shigure o zo kiku

English Translation
In my fitful doze
do dreams pass over, I wonder,
into waking life?
For even when I wake I hear
the very same winter showers
Meaning
Do the dreams of a fitful doze pass over into waking life? Even after I wake, I hear the same showers I heard in my dream.
Commentary
Book Six Winter Poems 407

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the topic 'Winter Showers in the Late Hours Before Dawn'"
Composed on the topic of showers before dawn. Do the dreams of a fitful doze pass over into waking life, the poet asks, since even after waking he hears the same showers he heard in his dream? In the sound of showers that continues after he wakes, he senses how blurred the boundary between dream and waking is.
The author, "Fujiwara no Takanobu Ason," was the son of Fujiwara no Tametsune. His mother was Bifukumon'in no Kaga, making him the elder half-brother of Fujiwara no Teika. He was known as a master of nise-e portraiture.
On the same topic of showers before dawn as the preceding poem, 406, it also has "kayou ramu" as its third line. Where the preceding poem sings of passage between tears and sky, this one sings of passage between dream and waking, and the two form a pair.

First line, "utatane wa": "utatane" is dozing off without going to bed. Like "hitorine no" in the preceding poem, 406, it opens with a word for a kind of sleep.
Second line, "yume ya utsutsu ni": "utsutsu" is reality, the waking state, and the interrogative "ya" closes with the attributive "ramu" in the third line.
Third line, "kayou ramu": the same third line as the preceding poem, 406, and the poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "samete mo onaji": "even when I wake, the same" as in the dream.
Fifth line, "shigure o zo kiku": the emphatic "zo" closes with the attributive "kiku," stressing that he hears the same showers as in his dream.
