as if to say "Behold the moon!"
how clear it has grown,
the sky at evening's fall
above Mount Obasute
Meaning
Even before the moon has risen, the evening sky over Mount Obasute has grown piercingly clear, as if to say, "Look at the moon!"
Commentary
Book Four Autumn Poems I 278

Headnote: "Composed as a moon poem when a hundred-poem sequence was composed at the house of the Regent and Former Minister of the Right"
Composed on "the moon" when hundred-poem sequences were composed at the residence of the Regent and Former Minister of the Right, Kujō Kanezane. At Mount Obasute, famed for its moon, even before the moon has risen the evening sky has grown piercingly clear, as if urging one to look at the moon. The poem catches the clear beauty of the sky itself awaiting the moonrise as something that invites moon viewing.
The author, "Fujiwara no Takanobu Ason," was the son of Fujiwara no Tametsune (Jakuchō). His mother, Bifukumon'in no Kaga, later married Fujiwara no Shunzei, making him the elder half-brother of Fujiwara no Teika. Known as a master of realistic portraiture, he rose to Provisional Master of the Right Capital Office.
Following the preceding poem, 277, it sings of the moon at Mount Obasute in Sarashina. Poem 235 of this book also ends with "yūgure no sora," singing of the Tanabata evening.

First line, "idenu yori": "nu" is the attributive of the negative "zu": "even before it has risen."
Second line, "tsuki miyo to koso": "miyo" is imperative, "look at the moon," and "koso" links with "kere" in the third line.
Third line, "saenikere": "ni" is the continuative of the perfective "nu" and "kere" the realized form of "keri," closing with "koso": "it has grown clear." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "Obasuteyama no": Mount Obasute at Sarashina in Shinano, famed for the moon, taking up "Sarashina no yama" in the preceding poem, 277.
Fifth line, "yūgure no sora": ends on a noun, the sky awaiting the moonrise. It is the same final line as 235 of this book.
