Book Thirteen Love Poems III 809
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the heart of love at the first meeting"
Composed, like the preceding poem, on the topic "love at the first meeting." Are you that very one? he says; then whose was all that coldness, that I now regret even having resented you? Meeting her for the first time, he finds her so tender that she seems no longer the one who was so cold, so that even his past resentment now fills him with regret, expressing a bewilderment brimming with the joy of the first meeting.
The author, "Fujiwara no Takanobu Ason," was the son of the monk Jakuchō. His mother was Bifukumon'in no Kaga, and he was an elder half-brother of Fujiwara no Teika. He was known as a master of the portrait style called nise-e.
The preceding poem saw the pain of a long love behind the joy of first meeting, while this one regrets past coldness out of the joy of meeting, so that two poems on the same topic stand side by side, one looking back on past tears and one on past resentment.
First line, "kimi ya sore": "ya" is an interrogative particle, "are you that one?" The poem pauses here.
Second line, "arishi tsurasa wa": "arishi" means former, "the coldness of before."
Third line, "tare nareba": "whose could it have been," showing his bewilderment that the tender one before him and the cold one of before should be the same person.
Fourth line, "uramikeru sae": "sae" is an additive particle, "even my having resented you."
Fifth line, "ima wa kuyashiki": "now I regret it," ending in the attributive form to leave a lingering feeling.
