Commentary
Book Five Autumn Poems II 313

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the topic 'Hearing Deer While Moored at Night'"
Composed on the topic "Hearing Deer While Moored at Night." At the harbor of Ina, where the poet lies afloat aboard a boat, he hears the pine wind blowing down from the peak, carrying a deer's voice. Catching not only the deer's voice but the sound of the pine wind that bears it, he depicts the breadth of near and far as sound descends from the mountains to the shore.
The author, "Fujiwara no Takanobu Ason," was the son of Fujiwara no Tametsune. His mother was Bifukumon'in no Kaga, making him the elder half-brother of Fujiwara no Teika. He was known as a master of nise-e portraiture.
It shares "ukine" and "kikoyu nari" with the preceding poem, 312, moving the same conceit to another harbor.

First line, "ukine suru": "ukine" is a pivot word joining "floating sleep" and "sorrowful sleep," taking up "ukine no toko" in the preceding poem, 312.
Second line, "Ina no minato ni": the harbor of Ina was a port at the mouth of the Ina River in Settsu.
Third line, "kikoyu nari": the same third line as the preceding poem, 312. The poem pauses here and names in the lower verse what is heard.
Fourth line, "shika no ne orosu": "blowing down with the deer's voice," showing the sound's movement from the peak down to the harbor.
Fifth line, "mine no matsukaze": the poem ends on a noun. Where the preceding poem, 312, set the deer's voice itself in its last line, this one sets there the pine wind that carries it.
