Book Six Winter Poems 408
Headnote: "Composed as a poem on winter showers"
Composed as a poem on winter showers. Has the place where he stands come beneath the clouds that roam around the mountain, the poet asks, as he hears the showers passing over the plain at its foot? He catches by sound the clouds that circle the mountain coming down to its foot and passing by as they let fall their showers.
The author, "Saki no Ukyō Gon-no-Daibu Yorimasa," was the son of Hyōgo no Kami Minamoto no Nakamasa. Through the Hōgen and Heiji disturbances he rose to the Junior Third Rank and was called Gen-Sanmi. In the fourth year of Jishō (1180) he raised troops with Prince Mochihito to overthrow the Taira, and took his own life after defeat at Uji.
The three poems from this one through 410 are poems on showers placed under the same headnote, and all gaze at showers in the mountains from afar. Taking up the "yamameguri" of 405, two poems earlier, this poem sings of clouds circling the mountain.
First line, "yama meguru": "circling the mountain," the clouds that bring showers as they make the round of the hills. The same word as "yamameguri" in 405 of this book.
Second line, "kumo no shita ni ya": the interrogative "ya" closes with the attributive "ran" in the third line.
Third line, "narinu ran": the perfective "nu" and the present conjecture "ran," "have I come to be beneath the clouds?" The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "susono no hara ni": "susono" is the gently spreading land at the foot of a mountain.
Fifth line, "shigure sugu nari": "nari" infers from sound, "I hear the showers passing."
