Book Six Winter Poems 409
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed as a poem on winter showers"
Composed as a poem on winter showers. Along the distant chain of hills where the showers move on, the poet says, the peaks must be hidden in cloud before the showers have finished passing from one to the next. He gazes from afar at showers moving peak by peak and at the clouds that follow them to cover the hills.
The author, "Minamoto no Moromitsu," was the son of Major Counselor Minamoto no Moroyori. A poet from the cloistered-rule period into the early Kamakura period, he later took the tonsure under the name Shōren. He was the father of Go-Toba-in no Kunaikyō, known as a poet of the Shin Kokin age.
The three poems from the preceding poem, 408, through the next, 410, are poems on showers under the same headnote, all gazing at showers in the mountains from afar.
First line, "shigureyuku": "shiguru" is for showers to fall, and "yuku" shows them moving on as they fall.
Second line, "ochi no toyama no": "ochi" means far off, and "toyama" are hills near a village. 453 of this book also sings of distant mountains in "ochi no takane."
Third line, "minetsuzuki": a chain of linked peaks. Like "newatashi" in the next poem, 410, it looks at the line from peak to peak.
Fourth line, "utsuri mo aezu": "aezu" means "not managing to finish," "before the showers have finished moving across."
Fifth line, "kumogakuru ran": "kumogakuru" is to be hidden in cloud, with "ran" as the present conjecture.
