Book Six Winter Poems 410
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed as a poem on winter showers"
Composed as a poem on winter showers. Ah, the poet says, the showers fall in the Godless Month, crossing from ridge to ridge over the high peaks of Hira where the storm winds blow. In showers riding the storm across the Hira range he feels the true character of the Godless Month at the start of winter, and voices his feeling directly as "aware."
The author, "Dōin Hōshi," is Fujiwara no Atsuyori, son of Fujiwara no Kiyotaka, who took holy orders late in life. He was known for his deep devotion to poetry, and a poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
The three poems from 408 to this one are poems on showers under the same headnote, all gazing at showers in the mountains from afar. Taking up "minetsuzuki" in the preceding poem, 409, this poem sings of showers crossing from peak to peak, "newatashi."
First line, "arashi fuku": "where the storm wind blows," the fierce wind sweeping down from the mountains.
Second line, "Hira no takane no": Hira is Mount Hira in Ōmi Province, rising west of Lake Biwa.
Third line, "newatashi ni": "newatashi" is crossing from peak to peak, answering "minetsuzuki" in the preceding poem, 409.
Fourth line, "aware shigururu": "aware" is a cry of feeling, "ah."
Fifth line, "Kannazuki kana": "Kannazuki," the Godless Month, is the tenth lunar month and the first month of winter. "Kana" is exclamatory.
