Commentary
Book Six Winter Poems 444

Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Hearing Hail in a Quiet Dwelling'"
Composed on the topic of hearing hail in a quiet dwelling. On a freezing night, as he sleeps alone beneath a roof of cedar boards, the poet says, he hears the hail come down as if to say, "Let your heart break." He hears the hail beating hard on the board roof as something bent on shattering further a heart already lonely in its solitary sleep.
The author, "Sakon'e no Chūjō Yoshitsune," was the son of Regent Kujō Kanezane. He later became Regent and Chancellor and wrote the kana preface to the Shin Kokin Wakashū. He also excelled in calligraphy, and a poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
Taking up "kokoro kudakuru" in the preceding poem, 443, this poem continues the hail with "kokoro kudake to." Like 403 and 404 of this book, it hears the sounds of winter under a cedar-board roof, and like 406 it sings of a night of sleeping alone.

First line, "sayuru yo no": "sayu" is to be freezing cold, the same word as "tsuki sayuru" in the preceding poem, 443.
Second line, "maki no itaya no": a "maki no itaya" is a humble house roofed with cedar boards, the same words as in 403 and 404 of this book.
Third line, "hitorine ni": "while sleeping alone," singing of the loneliness of sleeping alone as 406 of this book does.
Fourth line, "kokoro kudake to": "kudake" is imperative, "as if to say, heart, break," taking up "kokoro kudakuru" in the preceding poem, 443.
Fifth line, "arare furu nari": "nari" infers from sound, "I hear the hail falling."
