Wakarete mo onaji miyako ni arishikaba ito kono tabi no kokochi ya wa seshi

English Translation
Though we had parted,
we still lived on together
in the same capital,
so did I ever feel
as I do on this journey?
Meaning
Though we had parted, we still lived in the same capital, so did I ever feel such pain as I do now at this journey of yours? Never.
Commentary
Book Seven Parting Poems 490

Headnote: "Sent when someone asked how I felt about a man from whom I had parted going off to a distant place"
Sent when someone asked how she felt as a man with whom her relationship had already ended went off to a distant province. Though we had parted, we lived in the same capital, so did I ever feel as I do at this journey? Never, she says. More painful than the parting of lovers is this parting, which takes away even the comfort of living in the same city, she frankly says, revealing feelings she cannot sever.
The author, "Izumi Shikibu," was the daughter of Ōe no Masamune, Governor of Echizen. She was called by this name because she became the wife of Tachibana no Michisada, Governor of Izumi. She served Shōshi, consort of Emperor Ichijō, and is known for passionate love poems. She is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals of the Middle Ages and has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.

First line, "wakarete mo": "though we had parted" as lovers. The final poem of this book, 497, also opens with "wakarete mo"; where this poem looks back on feelings after parting, 497 pleads not to set the heart apart even after parting.
Second line, "onaji miyako ni": "in the same capital," the comfort of being near though apart.
Third line, "arishikaba": "shika" is the perfective of the past "ki," and with "ba" it gives a reason, "since we were."
Fourth line, "ito kono tabi no": "kono tabi" means both "this time" and "this journey" of the man.
Fifth line, "kokochi ya wa seshi": the rhetorical "ya wa" closes with "shi," the attributive of the past "ki," "did I feel like this? I did not."
