Makuru tomo mienu mono kara tamakazura tou hito sura mo taema gachi nite

English Translation
You say you're beaten,
but I see no sign of it, for
like the trailing vine,
even you who come to call
keep breaking off your visits
Meaning
You say you will give in, yet I see no sign of it; like a trailing vine that keeps breaking off, even your visits come only now and then.
Commentary
7 Return from the Pilgrimage

Izumi Shikibu set out on her pilgrimage and returned home after two or three days. Since the night she had refused him, pleading her purification, the prince had not come.
The woman is Izumi Shikibu, daughter of Ōe no Masamune and, as the wife of Tachibana no Michisada, Governor of Izumi, mother of Koshikibu no Naishi. The Prince of the Dazaifu is Prince Atsumichi, fourth son of Emperor Reizei, so called because he served as Governor-General of the Dazaifu.
When the prince's "Tsurakeredo wasure ya wa suru hodo fureba ito koishiki ni kyō wa makenan" arrived after her return, with his plea that she understand the depth of his feelings, Izumi Shikibu sent back this poem.
Afterward the prince came secretly as usual. Thinking he would hardly come, and tired from her recent pilgrimage, she had dozed off, and no one heard the knocking at the gate. The prince, suspecting that some other man might be there, quietly went away.

The opening lines mean "though you do not seem to be beaten," taking up his "today I will give in" and reproaching him for saying so without actually coming, with an adversative connective.
The third line, "tamakazura," is a pillow word for a trailing vine, which leads to "breaking off" because such vines grow long and snap apart, and it governs "taema gachi" in the lower verses. The lower verses mean "even the one who visits comes only with long gaps," with a particle meaning "even." She lightly parries his words, asking him to show his love not in words but in visits.
