Headnote: "Composed when, my term in Ōsumi Province over, I was about to go up to the capital, but the Senior Assistant Governor-General held me back, saying the settling of affairs was not yet done"
Composed when, his term as Governor of Ōsumi over, the poet was about to go up to the capital, but the Senior Assistant Governor-General of Dazaifu held him back, saying the business of the province had not yet been settled. Grieving only at the thought that they must be waiting for me at Suminoe, I wear my heart out in Tsukushi as the years pass, he says. Born into the house of the Sumiyoshi Shrine priests, he thinks of his home at Suminoe and laments being detained and unable to return.
The author, "Tsumori no Arimoto," was of the Tsumori clan, the priestly house of the Sumiyoshi Shrine, and according to the headnote served as Governor of Ōsumi.
First line, "Suminoe ni": Suminoe is the shore of Sumiyoshi in Settsu, the poet's home and a poetic place famous for its pines.
Second line, "matsuramu to nomi": "matsu" means both "to wait" and the pines for which Suminoe is famous. "Ramu" is the present conjecture, "they must be waiting." Poem 521 of this book says "matsuramu to omou hito wa nakeredo," so this poem, with someone waiting, and 521, with no one waiting, form a pair.
Third line, "nagekitsutsu": the continuative "tsutsu," "grieving on and on."
Fourth line, "kokoro tsukushi ni": "tsukushi" means both wearing out the heart with worry and Tsukushi, where Dazaifu stood.
Fifth line, "toshi o furu kana": the exclamatory "kana," "so I pass the years."
