Headnote: "Composed on Mount Atsusa when, while living in Settsu Province, I had occasion to go down to Mino Province"
Composed on Mount Atsusa when the poet, who lived in Settsu Province, had to go down to Mino. Pushing through the timber forest of Atsusa, where wood is hauled for palaces, I have come far from the bay of Naniwa, he says. As he makes his way deeper into the mountains, he feels how far behind he has left the seaside where he lived.
The author, "the Monk Nōin," had the lay name Tachibana no Nagayasu. After taking the tonsure he lived at Kosobe in Settsu and was called the Kosobe Lay Monk. He traveled the provinces composing poems, is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals of the Middle Ages, and has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.

First line, "miyaki hiku": "where timber for palaces is hauled," describing the forested mountain.
Second line, "Atsusa no soma o": "soma" is a mountain where timber is cut, here the forest of Mount Atsusa.
Third line, "kakiwakete": "pushing through the growth," making his way along a deep mountain path.
Fourth line, "Naniwa no ura o": the shore of Naniwa in Settsu, where the poet lived.
Fifth line, "tōzakarinuru": "nuru" is the attributive of the perfective "nu," ending in the attributive form for a lingering effect, "how far I have come away." Poem 529 of this book also sings of the wind in the shore pines "growing distant" as the boat rows on, so a land journey through the mountains and a sea journey across the offing form a pair, both singing of home receding.
