Tabigoromo asa tatsu ono no tsuyu shigemi shibori mo aezu shinobu mojizuri

English Translation
My traveler's robe,
on the moor I leave at dawn
the dew lies so thick
I cannot wring my sleeves dry,
robe of Shinobu's tangled print
Meaning
Setting out at dawn across the moor in my traveler's robe, I find the dew so heavy that I cannot wring my sleeves dry—a robe like the tangled print of Shinobu, as tangled as the feelings I hold back.

Headnote: "Composed on the theme of heavy dew on a traveler's robe"
Composed on the topic "heavy dew on a traveler's robe." Setting out across the moor at dawn in my traveler's robe, I find the dew so thick that I cannot wring my sleeves dry—a robe of Shinobu's tangled print, the poet says. He overlays the dew-soaked robe with the tangled pattern of Shinobu cloth, expressing the tears of travel and feelings held in check.
The author, "Former Archbishop Kakuchū," was the son of Regent Fujiwara no Tadamichi. A monk of Onjōji, he rose to Tendai Abbot and Archbishop.
A Kokin Wakashū poem by Minamoto no Tōru, the Kawara Minister of the Left, asks for whose sake his heart began to be tangled like the Shinobu print of Michinoku, and it is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu. The "shinobu mojizuri" of this poem draws on it.

First line, "tabigoromo": the robe worn for travel, associated with "tatsu" in the second line.
Second line, "asa tatsu ono no": "tatsu" means both to set out and to cut cloth, an associated word for the traveler's robe of the first line. "Ono" means a moor.
Third line, "tsuyu shigemi": the suffix "mi" gives a reason, "because the dew lies thick."
Fourth line, "shibori mo aezu": "aezu" means unable to finish, "I cannot wring them dry." The poem pauses here.
Fifth line, "shinobu mojizuri": a printed cloth with a tangled pattern made at Shinobu in Michinoku, where "shinobu" means both the place and "to hold back one's feelings." Ending on a noun, it draws on Minamoto no Tōru's poem.
