Commentary
Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1109

Headnote: "Composed at a lodging called the Shō Cave when I was passing through the Ōmine range"
This poem was composed at a lodging called the Shō Cave when he was passing through the Ōmine range in ascetic practice. Mat of moss on the floor of the cave where I shelter, how many nights has it been; sleep will not come, he says. Secluded in a cave deep in the Ōmine mountains and spending the nights with moss as his mat, he sings of the severity of practice. The cold and forlornness of nights in the cave, where however many nights pass he cannot sleep in peace, come through clearly.
The author, "Former Archbishop Kakuchū," was a son of the regent Fujiwara no Tadamichi. A monk of Onjōji, he served as head of the Tendai school and rose to archbishop.
It shares moss with "koke no koromo kitekeri" in the fourth and fifth lines of 1107 of this book, both singing of moss in a place of practice.

First line, "yadori suru": "where I take shelter."
Second line, "iwaya no toko no": "the bed of the rocky cave."
Third line, "kokemushiro": a word likening moss to a straw mat; the poem pauses on this noun. It shares moss with "iwa sae koke no" in the fourth line of 1107 of this book.
Fourth line, "ikuyo ni narinu": "how many nights has it been?" and the poem pauses here as well.
Fifth line, "i koso nerarene": "i" means sleep, "koso" is an emphatic binding particle, "re" the irrealis of the auxiliary of possibility "ru," and "ne" the realis of the negative "zu," closing the binding, "I cannot sleep."
