Book Eight Travel Poems 528
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of winter showers at a traveler's lodging when people composed poems for the Sumiyoshi Shrine poetry contest"
A poem on the topic of winter showers at a traveler's lodging from the Sumiyoshi Shrine contest. On the very sleeve of my sleep on a pillow of grass, the midnight showers too have borrowed lodging once again, the poet says. That showers fall upon a sleeve already wet with tears is pictured as the showers taking lodging there.
The author, "Kojijū of the Grand Empress Dowager," was the daughter of Ki no Mitsukiyo, Superintendent of the Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine. A lady-in-waiting to Grand Empress Dowager Fujiwara no Masaruko, consort of both Emperor Konoe and Emperor Nijō, she was called Kojijū of the Waiting Evening.
It is the fourth poem on the topic of winter showers at a traveler's lodging from the Sumiyoshi Shrine contest and closes that topic.
First line, "kusamakura": sleep on the road, leading into "tabine" in the second line.
Second line, "onaji tabine no": "onaji," "the same," the sleeve already wet with tears, so that the traveler's tears and the showers lodge in the same sleeve.
Third line, "sode ni mata": "mata," "again, on top of my tears." Poem 538 of this book shares the line "sode ni mata," singing of showers falling on a sleeve on the road.
Fourth line, "yowa no shigure mo": "the showers of midnight, too."
Fifth line, "yado wa karikeri": the exclamatory "keri," "the showers have borrowed lodging in my sleeve." In 509 of this book the moon lodges in the tears on a sleeve, here the showers borrow lodging in a sleeve, and in the final poem, 544, the traveler borrows lodging from the clouds.
