Book Eight Travel Poems 527
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of winter showers at a traveler's lodging when people composed poems for the Sumiyoshi Shrine poetry contest"
A poem on the topic of winter showers at a traveler's lodging from the Sumiyoshi Shrine contest. The showers leaking under the shore hut thatched with fine seaweed—do they mean for the sleeves of my traveler's sleep to drip as if soaked with brine? the poet asks. Seeing the showers that leak into the rough seaside hut as meant to make the traveler weep, he expresses the tears of the road.
The author, "Minamoto no Nakatsuna," was the son of Minamoto no Yorimasa. He served as Governor of Izu among other posts, joined Prince Mochihito's uprising with his father in 1180, and took his own life at Uji.
It is the third poem on the topic of winter showers at a traveler's lodging from the Sumiyoshi Shrine contest.
First line, "tamamo fuku": "tamamo" is a fine name for seaweed, "thatched with seaweed."
Second line, "isoya ga shita ni": "isoya" is a hut on the shore, "beneath its roof." Like "iso no tomaya" in 515 of this book, it is a rough lodging by the sea.
Third line, "moru shigure": the showers leaking through the roof, and the poem pauses here. Poem 525 of this book also sings of a shower leaking onto a pillow of pine roots.
Fourth line, "tabine no sode mo": "mo," "not only the hut but even the sleeves of my sleep on the road."
Fifth line, "shiotare yo to ya": "shiotaru" means to drip as if soaked with brine, overlaid with being wet with tears. "To ya" means "do they say?", a question.
