Book Eight Travel Poems 526
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of winter showers at a traveler's lodging when people composed poems for the Sumiyoshi Shrine poetry contest"
Like the preceding poem, composed on the topic of winter showers at a traveler's lodging for the Sumiyoshi Shrine contest. Waking in the night at Shikitsu Bay, where salt seaweed is spread, were my sleeves wet only from the showers? No, from tears as well, the poet says. Weaving in Shikitsu Bay near Sumiyoshi, he expresses through the showers the tears shed in the loneliness of waking at night.
The author, "the Monk Shun'e," was the son of Minamoto no Toshiyori. A monk of Tōdaiji, he named his lodging at Shirakawa in the capital the Karin'en and gathered many poets there. Known also as the teacher of Kamo no Chōmei, he has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
It is the second poem on the topic of winter showers at a traveler's lodging from the Sumiyoshi Shrine contest.
First line, "moshiogusa": seaweed burned to make salt, leading into "shiki" in the second line.
Second line, "Shikitsu no ura no": "shiki" means both spreading the salt seaweed and Shikitsu Bay near Sumiyoshi in Settsu.
Third line, "nezame ni wa": "when I wake in the night" while sleeping on the road.
Fourth line, "shigure ni nomi ya": the limiting "nomi" and the rhetorical "ya," which closes with the attributive "keru" in the last line.
Fifth line, "sode wa nurekeru": "keru" is the attributive of "keri," "were my sleeves wet only from the showers? No, from tears as well."
