Book Eight Travel Poems 531
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed as a travel poem when a hundred-poem sequence was composed at the house"
A poem on the topic of travel from the hundred-poem sequence at Kujō Kanezane's house. How moving is this rough hut on the Cape of Nojima; on my sleeves wet with dew, the waves too have broken, the poet says. On sleeves already wet with the dew of tears, the waves of the shore splash as well, and he expresses the loneliness of a night by the sea that soaks the sleeves twice over.
The author, "Master of the Empress Dowager's Household Shunzei," is Fujiwara no Shunzei, son of Provisional Middle Counselor Fujiwara no Toshitada. He served as Master of the Empress Dowager's Household and compiled this anthology by order of Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa. He was the father of Fujiwara no Teika and has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
It closes the three travel poems from the hundred-poem sequence at Kanezane's house.
First line, "aware naru": "deeply moving."
Second line, "Nojima ga saki no": the Cape of Nojima, a poetic place in Awaji sung of since the Man'yōshū.
Third line, "iori kana": "iori" is a temporary lodging on the road, and "kana" exclamatory. The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "tsuyu oku sode ni": "tsuyu" overlays the dew of the moor with tears.
Fifth line, "nami mo kakekeri": "mo," "even the waves, besides the dew," with the exclamatory "keri." Poem 536 of this book says "sode no nami wa kakekere," sharing the conceit of waves washing the sleeves. The next poem, 532, says "nami kakezu tote nurenu sode ka wa," placed as if answering this poem, where the waves do break, that sleeves are wet even without them.
