Book Eight Travel Poems 539
Headnote: "Composed as a travel poem for a poetry contest at the house of the Regent when he was Minister of the Right"
Composed on the topic of travel for a poetry contest at the house of Kujō Kanezane when he was Minister of the Right. Fitful showers pass over the hut where I sleep on my journey, and even in their aftermath my sleeves are wet, the poet says. That his sleeves do not dry even after the showers have gone is because of the tears he sheds in the loneliness of travel.
The author, "Fujiwara no Suketada," was a poet of the late Heian period who took part in the poetry contests at Kujō Kanezane's house.
The "Regent, Minister of the Right" of the headnote refers to Kujō Kanezane, Regent when this anthology was compiled, by the office of Minister of the Right he held at the time of the contest.
First line, "tabine suru": "where I sleep on my journey." It shares its first line with 536 and 538 of this book.
Second line, "iori o suguru": "iori" is a temporary lodging on the road, "passing over it."
Third line, "murashigure": a fitful shower that falls for a while and stops. The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "nagori made koso": "nagori" is what remains after something has passed, and the emphatic "koso" closes with the perfective "kere" in the last line.
Fifth line, "sode wa nurekere": "kere" is the perfective form of the exclamatory "keri," "my sleeves are wet even after the shower has gone," overlaying the lingering drops with the tears of travel.
