Book Eight Travel Poems 540
Headnote: "Composed as a travel poem"
Composed on the topic of travel. Sleeping on my journey in the barrier hut at Fuwa where hail leaks in, I could not let even a dream pass, the poet says. Kept awake by the sound of hail leaking into the run-down hut, he fancies that just as a barrier stops travelers, it would not let even his dreams through, conveying the loneliness of a night on the road.
The author, "Ōnakatomi no Chikamori," was of the Ōnakatomi clan, which held the office of chief priest of the Ise Shrine by inheritance.
First line, "arare moru": "where hail leaks through" gaps in the roof.
Second line, "Fuwa no sekiya ni": the Fuwa Barrier was a poetic barrier in Mino, and "sekiya" is the guards' hut. Poem 499 of this book sings of moonlight leaking through the eaves of the barrier hut at Suma, so the hut where moonlight leaks and the hut where hail leaks form a pair.
Third line, "tabine shite": "sleeping on my journey."
Fourth line, "yume o mo e koso": "mo," "not only people but even dreams." "E" with a negative expresses impossibility, and "koso" closes with the perfective "kere" in the last line.
Fifth line, "tōsazarikere": "zari" is the continuative of the negative "zu" and "kere" the perfective form of the exclamatory "keri," "it would not let them pass," overlaying the barrier's stopping of travelers with its stopping of dreams.
