Book Nine Poems of Lament 548
Headnote: "Composed when I was left behind by Prince Tametaka, Head of the Board of Censors"
Composed after the death of her lover, Prince Tametaka, Head of the Board of Censors. What a pity, she says, that this mourning robe I wear as a keepsake will surely rot away within these very days. Cherishing the robe itself as a keepsake of the dead, she laments that, soaked by her unceasing tears, even this keepsake will soon decay, showing the depth of her grief. Prince Tametaka was the third son of Emperor Reizei and died in 1002.
The author, "Izumi Shikibu," was the daughter of Ōe no Masamune, Governor of Echizen. She was called by this name because she became the wife of Tachibana no Michisada, Governor of Izumi. She served Shōshi, consort of Emperor Ichijō, and is known for passionate love poems. She is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals of the Middle Ages and has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
First line, "oshiki kana": the exclamatory "kana," "what a pity." The poem pauses here.
Second line, "katami ni kitaru": "taru" is the attributive of the continuative "tari," "that I wear as a keepsake," making the mourning robe a keepsake of the dead. It takes up "katami" in the preceding poem, 547.
Third line, "fujigoromo": a coarse robe woven from wisteria fiber and the like, that is, a mourning robe. The wisteria robe also appears in 583 and 592 of this book.
Fourth line, "tada kono koro ni": "within these very days," any time now.
Fifth line, "kuchihatenu beshi": the intensive "nu" and conjectural "beshi," "it will surely rot away," implying that it will decay from being soaked with tears.
