Book Nine Poems of Lament 558
Headnote: "Sent when Major Counselor Nagaie, who was living with the daughter of Major Counselor Tadanobu, had shut himself away at Hōjūji at the time the lady died"
Sent when Fujiwara no Nagaie, whose wife was the daughter of Fujiwara no Tadanobu, had shut himself away at Hōjūji after she died. Even while you grieve, console yourself in part, the poet says, for no one can stay in this world to the end. Pointing to the truth of impermanence, that everyone must die someday, she comforts Nagaie on the loss of his wife. Nagaie's wife died in 1025.
The author, "Daini no Sanmi," is Fujiwara no Kenshi, daughter of Fujiwara no Nobutaka and Murasaki Shikibu. She served as wet nurse to Emperor Go-Reizei and was called by this name because she became the wife of Takashina no Nariakira, Senior Assistant Governor-General of Dazaifu. She has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
The next poem, 559, is Nagaie's reply, which takes up this poem's "tare mo tsui ni wa tomaru beki ka wa" with "tare mo mina tomaru beki ni wa aranedomo."
First line, "kanashisa o": "the sorrow" of losing his wife.
Second line, "katsu wa omoi mo": "katsu wa" means "on the other hand," expressing "even while grieving."
Third line, "nagusameyo": the imperative of "nagusamu," "console yourself." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "tare mo tsui ni wa": "everyone, in the end." It corresponds to "tare mo mina" in the first line of the next poem, 559.
Fifth line, "tomaru beki ka wa": the rhetorical "ka wa," "can anyone stay in this world? No one can."
