Book Nine Poems of Lament 579
Headnote: "Her reply"
A reply to Retired Emperor Sutoku's poem before it. In the sorrow of this day when we scatter and part, the poet says, it is my tears that will not stop. Taking up the emperor's wish to keep at least his tears, she answers that because of the grief of this parting, far from staying, her tears keep flowing, sharing with him the sorrow of losing Taikenmon'in.
The author, "Hyōe of Jōsaimon'in," was the daughter of Minamoto no Akinaka, Head of the Council of Divinities. A younger sister of Taikenmon'in no Horikawa, she served Taikenmon'in and later her daughter, Princess Muneko, Jōsaimon'in. She was one of the poets of Retired Emperor Sutoku's Kyūan Hyakushu.
In this exchange with the preceding poem, 578, this poem takes up "katagata wakaru" and "namida o dani mo todomete" with "chirijiri ni wakaruru" and "namida shimo koso tomarazarikere."
First line, "chirijiri ni": "scattered apart," answering "katagata" in the preceding poem.
Second line, "wakaruru kyō no": "of this day when people part," answering "wakaru tomo" in the third line of the preceding poem.
Third line, "kanashisa ni": "because of the sorrow."
Fourth line, "namida shimo koso": the emphatic "shimo" and the emphatic "koso," which closes with the perfective "kere" in the last line. It answers "namida o dani mo" in the preceding poem.
Fifth line, "tomarazarikere": "zari" is the continuative of the negative "zu" and "kere" the perfective of the exclamatory "keri," "they do not stop." It answers "todometeshigana" in the last line of the preceding poem and shares its words with "tomarazarikeri" in 565 of this book.
