Book Nine Poems of Lament 585
Headnote: "Composed on a memorial anniversary long after Major Counselor Kinzane passed away"
Composed on a memorial day many years after the death of her father, Major Counselor Fujiwara no Kinzane. When I count, it has become a tale of long ago, she says, though the parting feels as if it were now. Counting on her fingers, she knows long years have passed, yet in her heart the parting from her father is still vivid, a gap between the distance of time and the nearness of feeling. Kinzane died in 1107.
The author, "Wife of the Hanazono Minister of the Left," was the daughter of Major Counselor Fujiwara no Kinzane and the wife of Minister of the Left Minamoto no Arihito. She was a sister of Taikenmon'in Shōshi.
Poems 562 and 563 of this book regret, at the end of the year of death, that the parting is growing distant, while this poem says that even after long years the parting still feels near, treating the same theme across a different span of time.
First line, "kazoureba": "kazoure" is the perfective, and with "ba" means "when I count."
Second line, "mukashigatari ni": "mukashigatari" is a tale of the past.
Third line, "narinikeri": "ni" is the continuative of the perfective "nu" and "keri" expresses realization, "it has become." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "wakare wa ima no": "the parting is as if now," set against "mukashi" in the second line.
Fifth line, "kokochi suredomo": the concessive "domo," "though it feels so," in inverted relation to the upper verse.
