where I saw a sorrow
beyond compare,
still, to leave it behind
is sad, I find, as well

Commentary
Book Nine Poems of Lament 584

Headnote: "Written on a pillar when, after Middle Counselor Korezane died at the Rokujō house and the memorial services were over, I was returning to the Kujō hall"
When the poet's son, Middle Counselor Fujiwara no Korezane, had died at the house in Rokujō and the memorial services were over, the poet wrote this on a pillar of the house as he returned to his hall at Kujō. Though this is the house where I saw sorrow beyond compare, he says, still it is sad to part from it. Though it is the painful house where he witnessed his son's death, for that very reason it holds his son's memory and is hard to leave, showing a parent's tangled feelings.
The author, "Ōmiya Former Chancellor," is Fujiwara no Koremichi, son of Provisional Major Counselor Fujiwara no Munemichi. He rose to Chancellor and was called the Kujō Chancellor and the Ōmiya Chancellor. He presented his memorial of advice, the Taikai Hishō, to Emperor Nijō.

First line, "tagui naku": "beyond compare."
Second line, "uki koto mieshi": "uki koto," "sorrowful thing," is his son's death, and "shi" the attributive of the past "ki."
Third line, "yado naredo": "yado" is the Rokujō house where Korezane died, and "do" is concessive.
Fourth line, "so mo wakaruru wa": "so mo" means "even so," and leaving the house is called "parting," overlaid with parting from his son.
Fifth line, "kanashikarikeri": "keri" expresses realization, "it was sad."
