Book Nine Poems of Lament 583
Headnote: "Composed when, in mourning for Bifukumon'in, I took off my mourning dress by imperial order"
Composed when the poet, in mourning for Bifukumon'in, was made by imperial order to take off his mourning dress. I dyed this wisteria robe deep with devotion, he says, yet how shallow are the days I wore it. His heart grieving for the empress is deep, yet by order of the court he must remove his mourning after only a few days, and he conveys this regret through the contrast of "deep" and "shallow." Bifukumon'in, empress of Emperor Toba and mother of Emperor Konoe, died in 1160.
The author, "Koga Palace Minister," is Minamoto no Masamichi, son of Provisional Major Counselor Minamoto no Akimichi, who rose to Palace Minister and was called the Koga Palace Minister.
First line, "kokorozashi": the sincere devotion felt for the late empress.
Second line, "fukaku someteshi": "te" is the continuative of the perfective "tsu" and "shi" the attributive of the past "ki," "that I dyed deep," set against "asaku," "shallow," in the fourth line's count of days.
Third line, "fujigoromo": mourning dress. The wisteria robe also appears in 548 and 592 of this book.
Fourth line, "kitsuru hikazu no": "tsuru" is the attributive of the perfective "tsu," "the days that I wore it."
Fifth line, "asaku mo aru kana": "asaku" overlays the shallowness of the dye with the shortness of the days, and "kana" is exclamatory, "how shallow."
