Omoiki ya kyō uchinarasu kane no oto ni tsutaeshi fue no ne o soen to wa

English Translation
Did I ever think
that to the temple bell we ring
on this day,
I would add the sound
of the flute you handed down?
Meaning
Did I ever imagine that today, to the sound of the bell we ring for you, I would add the sound of the flute you passed on to me?
Commentary
Book Nine Poems of Lament 597

Headnote: "Attached to the flute, when years later I held a Buddhist memorial for the Hanazono Minister of the Left, in whose house I had served as a boy and who had given me the flute when teaching me to play"
When the poet served as a boy in the house of the Hanazono Minister of the Left, Minamoto no Arihito, Arihito gave him a flute in order to teach him; years later, when the poet held a Buddhist memorial for Arihito, he attached this poem to that flute. Did I ever think, he says, that I would add the sound of the flute handed down to me to the bell we ring today? He laments the turn of fate by which he plays the flute he learned from his master at that master's memorial, and expresses his longing for the master who was also his teacher.
The author, "Hōin Jōsei," was a monk of the late Heian period who rose to the rank of hōin. According to the headnote, he served as a boy in Minamoto no Arihito's house in his youth.
Poem 577 of this book also sings of the service bell, "uchinarasu kane no oto." Poem 585 of this book is by Arihito's wife.

First line, "omoiki ya": "ki" is the past auxiliary and "ya" rhetorical, "did I think? I never did." The poem pauses here.
Second line, "kyō uchinarasu": "rung today" at the memorial. It is the same word as "uchinarasu" in the first line of 577 of this book.
Third line, "kane no oto ni": a line with an extra syllable, the sound of the service bell.
Fourth line, "tsutaeshi fue no": "tsutae" is to hand down, and "shi" the attributive of the past "ki," "of the flute handed down" by his master.
Fifth line, "ne o soen to wa": "n" is conjectural, "that I would add its sound." It layers the "sound" of the bell in the third line with the "sound" of the flute, returning by inversion to "omoiki ya" in the first line.
