Masukagami kokoro mo utsuru mono naraba saritomo ima wa aware to ya min

English Translation
If this clear mirror
could reflect a heart as well
as the face it shows,
surely now at least you would
look upon me with some pity
Meaning
If this clear mirror could reflect the heart as well as the face, then surely now, at least, you would look on mine with tenderness.
Commentary
Book Twelve Love Poems II 776

Headnote: "At the house of a woman who loved but never let it show, he borrowed a mirror, wrote this on its back, and returned it"
At the house of a woman who, though she had feelings, never let them show, he borrowed a mirror, wrote this on its back and returned it. If this clear mirror could reflect the heart too, he says, then surely now you would look on it with pity. If the mirror he had gazed into still held not only his face but his heart of love, the woman who looked into it would surely be moved, and so he entrusts his feelings to the mirror.
The author, "Fujiwara no Kinhira Ason," was the son of Minister of the Right Fujiwara no Kinyoshi. The younger brother of Fujiwara no Sanesada, the Go-Tokudaiji Minister of the Left, he was known as a poet.

First line, "masukagami": "a clear, bright mirror," taking up the mirror of the headnote.
Second line, "kokoro mo utsuru": "reflecting the heart as well as the form."
Third line, "mono naraba": "if it were such a thing."
Fourth line, "saritomo ima wa": "saritomo" means "surely, at least," expressing the hope that now she will.
Fifth line, "aware to ya min": "ya" is an interrogative particle and "n" the attributive of the conjectural "mu," binding together, "would you look on me with tenderness?"
