Book Twelve Love Poems II 775
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Sent to a woman"
Like the preceding poem, it was sent to a woman. I will not resent you wholly, he says; in a former life, we must not have pledged so far as to meet. Thinking that they cannot meet not because of her coldness but because in a former life they did not form a bond reaching so far, he holds back his resentment and laments the frailty of their karmic tie.
The author, "Captain of the Left Gate Guards Iemichi," is Fujiwara no Iemichi. He served as Captain of the Left Gate Guards and rose to Provisional Middle Counselor.
Poem 737 of this book also says that the lover cannot give up because their bond is not of this world alone, seeing love as a bond from a former life. Where 737 holds that he cannot let go because of a bond from a past life, this poem holds that they cannot meet because that bond was shallow, singing of the former-life bond from the opposite direction.
First line, "hitasura ni": "wholly, single-mindedly."
Second line, "urami shi mo seji": "shi mo" is emphatic and "ji" the negative volitional, "I will not resent you." The poem pauses here.
Third line, "saki no yo ni": "saki no yo" is a former life. It pairs with "kono yo hitotsu no" in the fourth line of 737 of this book.
Fourth line, "au made koso wa": "koso" is an emphatic particle binding with "keme" in the last line, "so far as meeting."
Fifth line, "chigirazarikeme": "zari" is the negative "zu" and "keme" the perfective form of the past conjectural "kemu," concluding the "koso" of the fourth line, "we must not have pledged."
