Commentary
Book Twelve Love Poems II 774

Headnote: "Sent to a woman"
A poem sent to a woman. If I die of love, he says, at least remember that it was for you, however cold your heart may be. No longer hoping to be rewarded by the cold one, he asks only that after his death she remember he died for her, a heartrending plea of love.
The author, "Provisional Major Counselor Sanekuni," was the son of Palace Minister Fujiwara no Kiminori. He rose to Provisional Major Counselor and was also known as a master of the flute.
Poem 734 of this book wishes at least to let the beloved know that he is dying of love, and this poem asks to be remembered after dying of love, sharing the wish, in the face of death, that the beloved know one's feelings. The "ware yue" of the second line is the same word as in the first line of 757.

First line, "koishinaba": "ba" after the irrealis is suppositional, "if I die of love."
Second line, "ware yue to dani": "ware" is spoken from the beloved's position, "that it was because of me," and "dani" expresses a minimal wish, "at least." It uses the same word as "ware yue no" in the first line of 757 of this book.
Third line, "omoiideyo": imperative, "remember it." It has six syllables, one too many, and the poem pauses here, standing in inverted order with what follows.
Fourth line, "sakoso wa tsuraki": "sakoso" means "however much," "however cold."
Fifth line, "kokoro naritomo": "tomo" is an adversative supposition, "even if your heart is so."
