Book Thirteen Love Poems III 802
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the heart of love when hundred-poem sequences were presented"
Like the preceding poem, a love poem from the Kyūan sequences. Not knowing if your heart will last, she says, my thoughts this morning are as tangled as my black hair. A morning-after poem, it overlays her unease, not knowing whether the man's pledged heart will last long, on the tangle of hair disordered by the night. Famed as a poem of sensual grace that sounds the "length" of black hair against the "length" of a heart's devotion, it was taken by Fujiwara no Teika into the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
The author, "Taikenmon'in no Horikawa," was the daughter of Minamoto no Akinaka, Head of the Council of Divinities. She served Taikenmon'in Fujiwara no Tamako, consort of Emperor Toba, and took the tonsure when her mistress did. She was one of the poets of the Kyūan sequences.
First line, "nagakaramu": "mu" is the attributive of the conjectural "mu," "that will last long," echoing the length of the black hair in the third line.
Second line, "kokoro mo shirazu": "not knowing your heart for certain."
Third line, "kurokami no": "black hair" leads into "midare" in the fourth line and is an associated word of "nagakaramu" in the first.
Fourth line, "midarete kesa wa": "tangled as my hair," and "kesa" is the morning after a night together.
Fifth line, "mono o koso omoe": "koso" is emphatic and binds with the realized form "omoe," "how lost I am in thought!"
