Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 851
Headnote: "Composed as a love poem at a poetry contest held by Provisional Middle Counselor Toshitada when he was Middle Captain"
This poem was composed as a love poem at a poetry contest held by Fujiwara no Toshitada when he was Middle Captain. Worn out with longing, she says, I have no comfort but to sigh "ah" and lament. There is no way to dispel the pain of love, and only sighing and lamenting serve as a slight comfort: the poem expresses without ornament a heart in love with nowhere to turn.
The author, "Iyo no Sanmi," was Fujiwara no Kaneko. The original carries the note "mother of Fujiwara no Atsukane Ason," and she was the mother of Fujiwara no Atsukane. The daughter of Fujiwara no Akitsuna, she served as wet nurse to Emperor Horikawa and was called Iyo no Sanmi. "Provisional Middle Counselor Toshitada" in the headnote is Fujiwara no Toshitada, the father of Fujiwara no Shunzei.
Poem 899 in this book also begins with "koiwabite" and sings of the lament of one worn out with love.
First line, "koiwabite": "wabu" means to be troubled, to suffer, "troubled by longing." It is the same first line as 899 in this book.
Second line, "aware to bakari": "aware" is an interjection escaping with a sigh, and "bakari" a restrictive particle, "only 'ah.'"
Third line, "uchinageku": "uchi" is a prefix that sets the rhythm, "to sigh and lament."
Fourth line, "koto yori hoka no": "other than that," showing that lamenting alone is her comfort.
Fifth line, "nagusame zo naki": "zo" is an emphatic particle that binds with the attributive "naki." She declares there is no other comfort.
