Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 852
Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'love that comes but does not stay' when ten love poems were composed at the same house"
This poem was composed on the topic "love that comes but does not stay" when ten love poems were likewise composed at the house of Fujiwara no Toshitada. Why would I resent one who goes straight back, he says, had they not at least left longing behind? More painful than the lover's going is the longing left behind after the going, and through the counterfactual he reveals the reason for his resentment.
The author, "Provisional Middle Counselor Morotoki," was Minamoto no Morotoki. The son of Minister of the Left Minamoto no Toshifusa, he rose to Provisional Middle Counselor. He is known as the author of the diary Chōshūki.
The next poem, 853, is also on the topic "love that comes but does not stay," and the two stand together. Where this poem laments the longing left behind by one who goes back, the next laments one who comes only fleetingly and leaves, treating the same topic from different angles.
First line, "tachikaeru": "turning straight back and going home," answering the topic's "comes but does not stay."
Second line, "hito o mo nani ka": "nani ka" is rhetorical, "why would I ... surely not." "Ka" is a binding particle concluded by the attributive "uramimashi" in the third line.
Third line, "uramimashi": "mashi" is the counterfactual auxiliary, answering "zariseba" in the last line, "I would not resent." The poem pauses here and stands in inverted order with the lower half.
Fourth line, "koishisa o dani": "dani" marks a minimum, "at least the longing."
Fifth line, "todomezariseba": "zari" is the negative auxiliary and "seba" a counterfactual condition, "had they not left it behind." It shares the verb "todomu" with "todomegataki wa" in the fourth line of the preceding poem, 849.
