Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 878
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
Even my heart is no longer my own, he says; does love change only one's looks? No. It is well known that one grows thin and changes in appearance when troubled by love, but more than that, he laments, even his heart has ceased to be his own, so changed is he in body and mind by love. Overlaying the change in appearance with the change of heart, it conveys the depth of love's suffering.
The author, "Minamoto no Nakatsuna," was the son of Minamoto no Yorimasa. He served as Governor of Izu and other posts, joined his father in Prince Mochihito's uprising, and was killed in the battle at Uji.
Poem 861 in this book says "misebaya kimi ni nareru sugata o," singing of an appearance wasted by love. This poem adds that the heart changes as well, so that poems singing of a changed appearance answer each other in the book.
First line, "kokoro sae": "sae" is an additive particle, "not only my looks but even my heart." It corresponds with "sugata no kawaru nomi ka wa" in the last line.
Second line, "ware ni mo arazu": to lose oneself, to become as though not oneself.
Third line, "narinikeri": "ni" is the continuative of the completive "nu" and "keri" expresses the exclamation of realization, "it has come to be so." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "koi wa sugata no": "sugata" is one's appearance, wasted by love. It echoes "nareru sugata o" in the last line of 861 in this book.
Fifth line, "kawaru nomi ka wa": "nomi" is restrictive and "ka wa" a rhetorical particle, "does it only change? no." It closes answering "kokoro sae" in the first line.
