Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 883

Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'love deepened by a lingering scent'"
This poem was composed on the topic "love deepened by a lingering scent." Why did the scent sink into my night robe, he says, when it has become the cause of my not forgetting? The fragrance of the beloved with whom he lay has passed into his night robe and stays there, and because of it his longing grows until he cannot forget, and the poem expresses a deepening love in the form of reproach toward the lingering scent.
The author, "Provisional Middle Counselor Tsunefusa," was Fujiwara no Tsunefusa. The son of Fujiwara no Mitsufusa, he rose to Provisional Middle Counselor. He left the diary Kikki and is also called Yoshida Tsunefusa.

First line, "utsuriga ni": "utsuriga" is a scent passed from another's robe and lingering. It answers "lingering scent" in the topic.
Second line, "nani shiminiken": "nani" means "why," "ni" is the continuative of the completive "nu," and "ken" an auxiliary conjecturing a past cause, "why did it sink in." The poem pauses here.
Third line, "sayogoromo": the robe worn at night, for sleeping, with "sa" a prefix. It is the subject of "shimi" in the second line, in inverted order.
Fourth line, "wasurenu tsuma to": "tsuma" pivots between "tsuma," "a cause, a means," and "tsuma," the "hem" of a robe. "Hem" is an associated word for "sayogoromo."
Fifth line, "narikeru mono o": "keru" is the attributive of the past "keri," and "mono o" a final particle expressing adversative lament, "though it has become so."
