Book Twenty Shinto Poems 1268
Headnote: "Composed at the Hosshinmon Ōji shrine on a pilgrimage to Kumano"
He composed this at the Hosshinmon Ōji shrine on a pilgrimage to Kumano. Hosshinmon Ōji is one of the many Ōji shrines along the Kumano road, and from here one was held to enter the sacred precinct of the Kumano Main Shrine. How glad I am to pass, with the god's vow as my guide, through the gate where the heart awakes, he says. Rendering the shrine's name, Gate of Awakening the Mind, into native words as "the gate where the heart is roused," he rejoices at entering, guided by the god of Kumano, the gate where the mind seeking enlightenment is awakened.
The author, "Provisional Middle Counselor Tsunefusa," is Fujiwara no Tsunefusa. A son of Fujiwara no Mitsufusa, he founded the Yoshida house and later rose to provisional major counselor. He left the diary Kikki.
1258 in this book was also composed at an Ōji shrine on the Kumano pilgrimage; that poem sings at Shioya Ōji of the god's descent, this one at Hosshinmon Ōji of the god's guidance.
First line, "ureshiku mo": "how glad I am."
Second line, "kami no chikai o": "chikai" is the vow of the Kumano god to save all beings.
Third line, "shirube nite": "shirube" means a guide on the way.
Fourth line, "kokoro o okosu": "rousing the heart" to seek the Way, that is, awakening the mind, the shrine's name put into native words.
Fifth line, "kado ni irinuru": the gate is Hosshinmon, and "nuru" is the attributive of the perfective "nu." Ending on the attributive form, it carries a note of wonder.
