How could you cast it
from your thoughts as something lost,
this catalpa bow?
There will surely come a time
when you draw it back again
- Meaning
- Why should you put it from your mind? Just as one draws a catalpa bow back, surely a time will come when you return to office again.

Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 975
Headnote: "Reply"
This is the reply to the preceding poem, 974. Why should you abandon the thought? As one draws back a catalpa bow, surely a time will come to return, he says. To Koremichi, who wept as he returned the bow, he layers the act of drawing a bow with returning to office and encourages him that a time to rise again will surely come. Koremichi did in fact later return to office and rose to chancellor.
The author, the "Minister of the Right of Naka-no-in," is Minamoto no Masasada. A son of Minamoto no Masazane of the Murakami Genji, he rose to minister of the right and was called the Minister of the Right of Naka-no-in.
This poem forms an exchange with the preceding poem, 974, taking up its "azusayumi" just as it is and answering "kaeru" with "hikikaesu."
First line, "nani ka sore": "nani ka" is a rhetorical binding particle closing with "beki" in the second line, "why should you."
Second line, "omoi sutsu beki": "beki" is the attributive of "beshi," expressing what is fitting, "should you cast it from your mind? You should not." The poem pauses here.
Third line, "azusayumi": a bow of catalpa wood, taking up "azusayumi" in the third line of the preceding poem, 974. It also serves to lead into "hiku," to draw.
Fourth line, "mata hikikaesu": drawing back the bow overlaps with returning to one's former office. It answers "kaeru o miru ni" in the fourth line of the preceding poem.
Fifth line, "toki mo arinan": "na" is the irrealis of the intensifying "nu" and "n" the conjectural "mu," "surely such a time will come."
