all the deeper grows the charm
that stirs within the heart;
the moon, I see, is something
to be gazed at all alone
Meaning
Through loneliness the moon's deep charm grows all the greater; the moon, I realize, is meant to be gazed at alone.
Commentary
Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 993

Headnote: "Composed when I wrote ten poems on the moon"
This poem was composed when he wrote ten poems on the moon. Through loneliness the moon's charm grows deeper; the moon was meant to be seen alone, he says. Realizing that the loneliness of viewing the moon by oneself deepens its charm, he declares outright that the moon is to be seen alone.
The author, "Priest Kenshō," was the adopted son of Fujiwara no Akisuke. He carried on the poetic learning of the Rokujō Fujiwara house and wrote works of poetics such as the Shūchūshō, and was known as an erudite scholar of poetry.
Where 986 of this book wishes to share with others the moon's charm felt alone, this poem says the moon is to be seen alone, so that opposite feelings are shown around the same solitary moon.

First line, "sabishisa ni": "through loneliness," expressing cause.
Second line, "aware mo itodo": "itodo" means all the more.
Third line, "masarikeri": "keri" expresses exclamation at a realization, "it grows greater." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "hitori zo tsuki wa": "zo" is an emphatic binding particle closing with "keru" in the fifth line. It shares "hitori," alone, with "hitori ite" in the first line of 983 and "hitori nomi" in the first line of 986 of this book.
Fifth line, "miru bekarikeru": "bekari" is the continuative of "beshi" and "keru" the attributive of the exclamatory "keri," "it is meant to be seen."
