Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 994
Headnote: "Composed when I wrote ten poems on the moon"
This poem was composed when he wrote ten poems on the moon. From now on I will not watch the moon until late at night; without any reason my tears have fallen, he says. Having found tears falling for no reason he could name as he watched the moon late into the night, he resolves not to watch so late again, expressing the inexpressible sorrow the moon brings.
The author, "Fujiwara no Kiyosuke, Lord," was a son of Fujiwara no Akisuke. He brought the poetic learning of the Rokujō Fujiwara house to completion and wrote works of poetics such as the Fukurozōshi and the Ōgishō. A poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
This is the last of the poems by those who composed ten moon poems on the same occasion. It shares the fifth line, "namida ochikeri," with 1004 of this book, both singing of tears falling at the sight of the moon.
First line, "ima yori wa": "from now on."
Second line, "fukeyuku made ni": "until the night grows late."
Third line, "tsuki wa miji": "ji" is the auxiliary of negative intention, "I will not look at the moon." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "sono koto to naku": "for no particular reason," expressing the nameless sorrow that comes from viewing the moon.
Fifth line, "namida ochikeri": "keri" expresses exclamation at a realization, "my tears have fallen." It is the same line as the fifth line of 1004 of this book.
