Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 996
Headnote: "Composed on seeing the moon when I had to leave the capital and go far away"
This poem was composed on seeing the moon when he had to leave the capital and go to a distant place. Though I have not had my fill, if I come round again to this world, do not change your face, moon above the mountain rim, he says. Setting out unsure whether he would ever return to the capital, he wishes that, as the moon circles the sky and rises again, he too might circle back, and calls on the moon to remain unchanged until then.
The author, "Hōin Jōken," was a son of Fujiwara no Michinori, who took the name Shinzei. After his father was killed in the Heiji Disturbance he was banished for a time, but was later pardoned and rose to the rank of hōin.
"Omogawari suna" in the fourth line is the same line as the fifth line of 1022 of this book, and it also answers "omogawari senu" in the fourth line of the closing poem, 1051.
First line, "akanaku ni": "naku" is an old form of the negative "zu," and "ni" adversative, "though I have not yet had my fill."
Second line, "mata mo kono yo ni": "to this world once again."
Third line, "megurikoba": "meguru" overlaps the moon's circling the sky with his own coming back around, and "ba" is conditional, "if I come round."
Fourth line, "omogawari suna": "na" is a prohibitive particle, "do not change your face." It is the same line as the fifth line of 1022 of this book.
Fifth line, "yama no ha no tsuki": "the moon at the mountain's rim," ending in a noun as a form of address.
