all the less my heart can find
any consolation:
the dawn moon that rises late
over Mount Obasute

While I wait, my heart finds even less consolation: O dawn moon, so slow to rise over Mount Obasute.
Commentary
Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1006

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
While I wait my heart is all the less consoled: dawn moon of Mount Obasute, she says. Mount Obasute is a famous place known for a moon that cannot console the heart even when seen. While waiting for the dawn moon that rises only late at night, even before seeing it, the waiting itself leaves the heart all the less consoled, deepening the conceit of the old poem.
The author, "Rokujō of Hachijōin's Household," was a lady who served Hachijōin, Princess Akiko.
This poem draws on the anonymous Kokin Wakashū poem "waga kokoro nagusamekanetsu Sarashina ya Obasuteyama ni teru tsuki o mite." It shares the fifth line, "ariake no tsuki," with 1000 and 1015 of this book, and with "nagusamazu" in 1004 it shares a heart unconsoled by the moon.

First line, "matsu hodo wa": "while I wait for the moon to rise."
Second line, "itodo kokoro zo": "itodo" means all the more, and "zo" is an emphatic binding particle.
Third line, "nagusamanu": "nu" is the attributive of the negative "zu," closing the "zo" of the second line, "my heart is not consoled." The poem pauses here. It answers "nagusamazu" in the third line of 1004 of this book.
Fourth line, "Obasuteyama no": a mountain in Sarashina in Shinano Province, a famous place for the moon, known as the land of a moon that cannot console the heart.
Fifth line, "ariake no tsuki": the moon that rises late and remains till dawn, a form of address ending in a noun. It is the same line as the fifth lines of 1000 and 1015 of this book.
