and gazes at the moon?

Commentary
Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1005

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
Feeling the storm through the pines deep in the hills, who wakes in the night and looks at the moon, he asks. On a night when a cold mountain storm rages, he pictures someone who wakes from sleep to look at the moon, imagining the loneliness of one who lives deep in the hills and the cold beauty of the moon such a person sees. It can also be read as describing himself as if he were another.
The author, "Fujiwara no Ietaka," was a son of Fujiwara no Mitsutaka. He studied poetry under Fujiwara no Shunzei and later became one of the compilers of the Shinkokin Wakashū. A poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
The preceding poem, 1004, is by Fujiwara no Teika, so that poems by two representative poets of the Shinkokin age stand side by side. It also shares with "tare mata kakaru sumai shite" in 1020 of this book the imagining of someone who lives deep in the mountains and gazes at the moon.

First line, "yama fukaki": "deep in the mountains."
Second line, "matsu no arashi o": "the fierce wind blowing through the pines."
Third line, "mi ni shimete": "feeling it pierce the body."
Fourth line, "tare ka nezame ni": "ka" is an interrogative binding particle closing with "ran" in the fifth line. "Nezame" is waking in the night.
Fifth line, "tsuki o miruran": "ran" is the attributive of the auxiliary of present conjecture "ramu," "might be gazing at the moon." It is the same line as the fifth line of 1020 of this book.
