Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1040
Headnote: "Composed on the Nunobiki Falls"
This poem was composed on the Nunobiki Falls. What I had only heard by report was nothing; higher than its fame are the Nunobiki Falls, he says. Seeing for himself the falls he had long heard praised, he finds that their reputation counts for little, for they are loftier and finer than their fame, singing of the wonder of seeing with one's own eyes. "Sound" and "high" are associated with the falls, layering renown and the height of the falls.
The author, "Fujiwara no Yoshikiyo," was a poet of the late Heian period whose biography is not known in detail.
It shares the fifth line, "Nunobiki no taki," with 1037 of this book. And where 1035 sings of the name of silent falls remaining, this poem sings of the actual falls, higher than their name, forming a contrast concerning the names of waterfalls. The poems on waterfalls end with this one.
First line, "oto ni nomi": "oto" means report or rumor, an associated word echoing the sound of the falls.
Second line, "kikishi wa koto no": "shi" is the attributive of the past auxiliary "ki," "what I had heard."
Third line, "kazu narade": "kazu narazu" means of no account, "was nothing."
Fourth line, "na yori mo takaki": "higher than its name," layering the height of the falls and the height of their fame. It answers "na koso nagarete" in the fourth line of 1035 of this book.
Fifth line, "Nunobiki no taki": ending in a noun, the same line as the fifth line of 1037 of this book.
