Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1045
Headnote: "Composed on summer grasses"
This poem was composed on summer grasses. When the tide comes in, there is no day that the wind carrying the waves across fails to blow on the lily leaves of Nojima Cape, he says. He depicts the leaves of lilies on Nojima Cape, which juts into the sea, swaying in the sea wind that drives the spray across at every high tide, capturing the stern yet cool aspect of summer grasses by the sea.
The author, "Minamoto no Toshiyori, Lord," was a son of Minamoto no Tsunenobu. He was active at the center of the poetic circle of Emperor Horikawa and, by order of Retired Emperor Shirakawa, compiled the Kin'yō Wakashū. He wrote the treatise Toshiyori Zuinō, and a poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
Following the preceding poem, 1044, on the rock-rooted pine of Irago Cape, this poem sings of the lilies of Nojima Cape, so that poems on plants living on seaside capes stand together.
First line, "shio mite wa": "when the tide comes in."
Second line, "Nojima ga saki no": a cape on the northwest coast of Awaji Island, a famous place. It answers "Irago ga saki no" in the second line of the preceding poem, 1044, in singing of a cape.
Third line, "sayuriba ni": "on the lily leaves," with "sa" a prefix.
Fourth line, "nami kosu kaze no": "of the wind that drives the waves across."
Fifth line, "fukanu hi zo naki": the emphatic binding particle "zo" closes with the attributive "naki," "there is no day it does not blow."
