If in exchange for me
by grieving we could make
the blossoms stay,
would today be the last day
of this life of mine?
- Meaning
- If blossoms would stay for the price of my own life spent in mourning them, today would surely be the last day of my life.

Book One Spring Poems 42
If the blossoms could be kept from falling at the cost of his life, the poet would gladly make today his last. Love for flowers is voiced with the force of staking one's life, and true feeling lies within the exaggeration.
The first line, "in exchange for me," means trading one's own life.
The second line, "by grieving we could make them stay," repeats the phrase of 23's second line. Where 23 answered with the argument that flowers would not be bound to spring, here the thought rises to staking one's life.
The third line, "if the blossoms," is a hypothesis.
The fourth line, "would today be," uses "ya" to ask a question: today of my life.
The last line, "the last day," closes a kakari-musubi with the "ya" of the fourth line and the attributive of the counterfactual "mashi."
